Sentient Creatures is a non-profit animal rescue group that functions
exclusively on contributions from the public. We do not have a physical
shelter to house those rescued, but are always in need of loving, safe,
foster homes for these special dogs. We were founded in 1994 to
expand the work of animal rescue begun by Chitra Besbroda in 1973.

Sentient Creatures is the only group dedicated to consistently rescuing
Harlem's abandoned, abused, and neglected "junkyard dogs." In the 27
years since Chitra first began her rescue efforts, Sentient Creatures
has rescued and placed more than 3500 of these abused
and abandoned animals in loving homes.

Our most urgent need is safe, loving foster and adoptive homes
in which to place rescued dogs. As well, monetary donations
are always gratefully received. Thank you!

Volunteers are always needed to walk, feed, play and cuddle these
wonderful, loving animals. If you are able to help with posting
flyers, adoption events, or fund raising efforts, please call
